The collection of white villages perched on cliff-sides in and around the Grazalema National Park are one of the country’s most stunning locations to visit. On the White Villages Guided Bicycle Tour we explore the beautiful scenery of mountains and agricultural land in the highlands before descending for a celebratory swim on one of Spain’s most unspoiled coastlines. This tour is classified as medium, but offers flexibility for those looking for either a greater challenge, or alternatively the odd shorter day in between to rest and relax in the stunning surroundings.
White Villages Guided Bicycle Tour: The Villages
The white villages in and around Grazalema National Park, so isolated on their mountain perches until recently connected by roads, have charmingly unique identities. The influences of the region’s various invaders and the associated Jewish, Muslim, and Christian populations have all been brought to bear, and the battles between them are still evident in many of the villages fortifications. Each village has its own speciality and delicacies, from wool production to delicious cheeses and hams.
White Villages Guided Bicycle Tour: The Terrain
This is a mountainous region and there is climbing in the route, though the major mountain passes are mostly optional depending on your legs. The scenery is varied and often spectacular, with incredible cliffs, gullies, and gorges in the mountain passes interspersed with agricultural fields and pristine coastline. The National Parks are covered in oaks and pines, and turquoise reservoirs provide a beautiful contrast. Mountain goats and griffon vultures add life to the stunning views.
White Villages Guided Bicycle Tour: Route
The White Villages Guided Bicycle Tour is designed to be as inclusive as possible. Daily distances are usually around 80 km, but there is room on some days to increase the distance or to build in a rest day. In such mountainous terrain there is climbing, though the serious mountains are mainly avoidable if you prefer a quieter day. There is always the support vehicle too for if it becomes too much.
Day of arrival (saturday): Pickup in Malaga and transfer to the four star hotel in a picturesque white village about an hour by car north of Malaga, and the four star hotel, one of the famous parador network. Prepare your equipment and explore the city, which has some of the largest bronze age dolmens in Europe, before we take through the week’s schedule.
Day 1 – The route sets off flat passing between spectacular reservoirs of blue-green water between sweeping agricultural fields – green in Spring but dry and yellow in Autumn. A flat start leads into the first moderate climb of the week before a descent to the 3 star hotel in a quiet white village.
Distance: 73 km (45 miles)
Elevation gain: 900 meters (3,000 feet)
Day 2 – A short route climbs steadily, and at times steeply, up to over a thousand meters altitude before a steady descent to the famous town of Ronda, set on a cliff side and split in the middle by a spectacular gorge. A choice then to take the afternoon off to enjoy the fantastic four star spa hotel and explore the town, or to add an additional loop on the bike. Sights in the town include the historic bullring, said to be the birthplace of the modern form of bullfighting, and the bridge that spans the gorge far below, and includes a chamber famously used as a prison. You can also descend to the valley to view the bridge and gorge from below.
Distance: 30 km (18 miles)
Elevation gain: 700 meters (2,200 feet)

Elevation gain: Direct route 800 meters (2,600 feet). Optional extension make 1500 m or 1900 m climbing respectively.
Day 4 – Today you have the choice to take a short ride direct to the next 4 star hotel set in stunning natural surroundings, and spend the afternoon relaxing and visiting the beautiful Grazalema. Distance: 17 km ( 11 miles) direct route, 64 km via the long loop
Elevation gain: 500 meters ( 1,600 feet) direct, 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) via long loop
