Our Seville to Granada Moorish Spain bike tour packs a lot in. In just six days riding you pass through Sevilla, Cordoba, and Granada, three of Spain’s most captivating and lively cities, and the center of Moorish power during centuries of Muslim rule in the peninsula. In between are hundreds of kilometers of typical Spanish dehesa, pine and oak forests, and mile after mile of olive trees.
For a brief while the Moors took control of almost the entirety of the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century, but it was in the southern half of the land mass that they really put down their roots. Muslim rule, in some form, lasted for over seven centuries until the fall of Granada in 1492. It is thus in Andalusia, the modern reincarnation of Al-Andalus, that the most impressive remnants of their presence are to be found.
Granada stands out for the palatial fortress of the Alhambra and the attached summer gardens, the Generalife. In Seville, the Giralda tower is the most impressive architecture remaining from the time of the Moors, though the architecture of the impressive Alcazar is predominantly in the Moorish style. Cordoba was the capital of the Caliphate of Corboba, and what remains of the Great Mosque, with its famous striped double arches, is one of the most evocative remainders of their time.
Seville to Granada Moorish Spain bike tour route
Our Seville to Granada Moorish Spain bike tour route takes you through some of the iconic landscapes of Spain. From Seville to Granada we head twice in the sierra to the North, through a typically Spanish fauna known as dehesa, and forests of oak and pine. Then, after some barren fields leaving Cordoba, we enter the never-ending rows of Olive trees, until finally tackling the slopes of the Sierra Nevada before the descent to Granada.
The Seville to Granada Moorish Spain bike tour is consistently rolling, though without any major mountains until the final day when we tackle the slopes of the Sierra Nevada, the highest peak on the mainland. Don’t worry, you can take a short cut halfway up if you can’t handle the climb to the ski resort In between we offer space to explore the magnificent cities we pass through, with a day off in Cordoba, and the option to extend the trip with an extra night in Granada to discover that incomparable city too.
Night of arrival: Arrive in Seville, one of Spain’s most lively cities. Make your way to the hotel in the city, and prepare your equipment. Meet your companions while we run through the plans for the week before heading out to explore the center.
Day 1 – We take the road into the Sierra north of Seville, where the main fauna on view is the Spanish dehesa, a landscape of rolling grasslands dotted with oak trees that are kept in check by wild boar and black Iberian pigs. The night is spent in a tranquil classical rural hotel in a small village.
Distance: 115 km (72 miles)
Elevation gain: 1,500 meters (5,000 feet)
Day 2 – After a first hour on flat plains we head back into the Sierra where Mediterranean oak forests dominate the surroundings, up and down lush, green, hills with rocky outcrops and birds of prey circling above. After a long ride we finally descend to the outskirts of Cordoba where our 4-star hotel is situated, in calm surroundings.
Distance: 130 km (80 miles)
Elevation gain: 2,000 meters (6,500 feet)
Day 3 – Either a complete day off, or if you prefer a quick loop in the morning, before an afternoon off discovering Cordoba, where the Great Mosque (now Cathedral) is the undoubted highlight.
Elevation gain: optional
Day 4 – A morning ride through vast and impressively barren landscape of agricultural fields, before entering the breathtaking olive plantations which will be a constant companion for the next few days. Rolling country roads take us to our four star hotel, which is either a converted farm with Arab baths or a typical Andalusian country house.
Distance: 105 km ( 65 miles)
Elevation gain: 1,300 meters ( 4,300 feet)
Day 5 – Olive trees, more olive trees, and yet more olive trees is the view as the route snakes over sometimes steep hills with magnificent views of the beautiful whitewashed villages among the fields. We are likely to meet shepherds and goatherds along the way, the local characters that really give the tour color. We spend the night in a quaint hilltop rural hotel.
Distance: 106 km (65 miles)
Elevation gain: 2,400 meters (7,900 feet)
Day 6 – We finally leave the olive trees and skirt around the city of Granada, following the perimeter of a beautiful reservoir before tackling the lower slopes of Spain’s highest mainland mountain, weather permitting. Descend and follow the city roads into Granada, to our three-star city center hotel.
Distance: 110 km (68 miles) or 132 (82 miles) km if climbing to the ski resort Pradollano
Elevation gain: 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) or 2,900 meters (9,500 feet) if climbing to the ski resort Prallodano
Day 7 – Check out and departure, or better yet extend the trip for one day and explore Granada and the Alhambra. If you plan to do this and want to go inside the Alhambra, you need to reserve tickets online beforehand or you will be unlikely to get tickets on the day.
