We organize bespoke Camino de Santiago cycling tours that allow you to decide how you would like to undertake your pilgrimage. The Way to Santiago de Compostela, or El Camino, is one of Spain’s most enchanting relics. Times may have changed, but beyond the cameras and the carbon-fiber walking poles the essence remains much as before; tens of thousands of pilgrims passing from refuge to refuge, by foot, on horseback, and these days by bike, and even wheelchair. The pilgrimage is, of course, the journey to pay homage to the supposed remains of Spain’s patron Saint, the apostle James the Great. The pilgrimage can take any number of routes, and traditionally began at one’s home. The most popular waymarked trail is the “French route”, the most popular Camino de Santiago cycling tours, which rolls over the Pyrenees and crosses the country parallel to the North Coast below the Cantabrian range.
The discovery of the remains of Saint James is said to date back to the year 813. As his legend grew on the back of tales of his role in the Christian fightback against the Moors the route became as important as the pilgrim trails to Jerusalem and Rome. Its popularity gradually declined over the centuries, until the turbulence of the twentieth century saw it almost die out completely. As recently as 1986, number registering for their Compostela, the certificate of completion, were as low 2,500. The rise since has been remarkable, largely on the back of the efforts of one Galician priest known as Don Elias Valiña Sampedro and a host of volunteer networks. These days there are more than 200,000 collecting the certificate each year.
Every Pilgrim has their own motivation for setting off. Many are still driven by religion, but many others do it for the exercise, the camaraderie, or just as a chance to get away and reflect upon things. Some hike across the entirety of the country, either in stages or in one go, while others just walk the final stretch. Many sections are very crowded, particularly on the French Route, and it can be an incredibly social experience. It still offers the space for those who require it though, and demands that one takes the time to reflect upon what is important to them. No one who arrives at Santiago de Compostela does so without having been enriched.

We prepare bespoke bicyle pilgrimage tours because there are so many different ways to undertake el Camino, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
The most popular route is the ruta Frances, the French route, which passes along the North of the country parallel to the North Coast, but further south. Alternatives include the North route, which largely follows the North Coast, or the Via de la Plata, which passes from the South to the North along the west of the country, which are slightly quieter. People also differ as to the distances they would like to ride, the length of their trip, where they would like to start, and the section of the route they would like to undertake.
Other options include type of accommodation – either hotels or pilgrim hostels, or a mix – and whether to cycle on the pilgrims track on a mountain bike, or to follow roads on a hybrid. Either way you’ll have a trip of a lifetime, but with so many variables, we prefer to discuss your preferences and work out a trip that best fits you.
